   Winter Lecture Series: Is There Anybody Out There? Fishing, Shipping, and Recreating
in Rhode Island's Offshore Waters

Tiffany Smythe, Coastal Manager, URI Coastal Resources Center/Rhode Island Sea Grant

Who is using Rhode Island's offshore waters? What are they doing, and where and when are they doing it? This lecture will offer insight into the fishing, shipping, and recreational activities that take place in Rhode Island's offshore waters. This presentation will include discussion of how URI researchers and coastal managers have studied and mapped these activities and how this information is informing the R.I. Ocean SAMP planning process. A wide variety of maps will be presented for discussion and review. Tiffany Smythe is a coastal manager and a Ph.D. candidate in Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island.

   Winter Lecture Series: Underwater Archaeology Uncovers Block Island's Sunken History

Rod Mather, URI History Professor

Marine archaeologist Rod Mather will describe underwater archaeological sites close to Block Island and the work that his team has been doing as part of the R.I. Ocean SAMP. That work includes historic research, ocean survey, archaeological site assessment using SCUBA, and the development of GIS databases. The potential archaeological sites in the waters off Block Island are quite extensive and include shipwrecks from the last century.

   Offshore Renewable Energy Across the Sea: the State of Ecological Knowledge in Europe

Description

Extensive offshore renewable energy developments (OREDs) in the form of wind farms have functioned for years in Northern European waters. This presentation will provide an overview about how OREDs may impact these European ocean environments, and illustrate these interactions using examples of varied organisms. This talk, given by European marine ecology experts Dr. Frank Thomsen (Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture, U.K) and Dr. Andrew Gill (Cranfield University, U.K.) will also address the current state of  knowledge relating to these impacts on marine mammals and fish, and recommendations for future studies to expand this knowledge.

   Winter Lecture Series: Assessing Bird Use of Rhode Island's Offshore Waters

How will the proposed offshore wind farm affect bird species in Rhode Island? The Rhode Island Ocean SAMP is undertaking marine spatial planning for R.I. offshore waters through a process that integrates the best available science with open public input and involvement. This lecture will investigate avian use of the study area by determining the distribution and abundance of birds, their movement ecology, and their temporal variation in offshore waters.

There is no fee for this lecture, but registration by March 2, 2010, is required.
