Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning (CMSP) is emerging as one of the nation's newest and most talked about tools for managing existing and future activities within our coastal and ocean regions. The University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center and the Rhode Island Sea Grant College Program (CRC/SG) have for over 30 years assisted organizations and governments all over the world to successfully develop and implement appropriate tools and techniques to improve the management of our coastlines and offshore waters. Most recently, through the development of its Ocean Special Area Management Plan (Ocean SAMP), Rhode Island, with leadership from CRC/SG, has received international recognition for applying CMSP as a tool to site offshore renewable energy and other future uses, including the protection of its natural resources.
