FEDERAL REGULATORY PROCESS
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) established the Smart from the Start Wind Energy Initiative for the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf to facilitate siting, leasing and construction of new projects. This initiative has allowed BOEM to identify priority wind energy areas for potential development, improve coordination with local, state, and federal partners, and streamline the leasing process while also building a robust and environmentally responsible offshore renewable energy program.
BOEM’s Wind Energy Area within the Ocean SAMP boundary is also the Areas of Mutual Interest (AMI) identified in the Rhode Island/Massachusetts Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Recently, this area was auctioned off during the first competitive offshore wind energy leasing process held in the U.S. For more information on the leasing and environmental review process.
