Seafood Cook-Off to Feature Gray Sole

High school culinary students to compete in 2019 Rhode Island Seafood Cookoff featuring gray sole

Warwick Area Career & Technical Center to host cookoff for five schools; public is invited

WARWICK, R.I.—Local high school culinary student teams will be competing in the 2019 Rhode Island Seafood Cookoff, hosted by the Warwick Area Career & Technical Center, on Wednesday, May 22, from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the public is invited to attend. RSVP required

Five teams will be serving up their own original recipes for locally caught gray sole. The audience will vote for their favorite dish, and the winning team will have their recipe featured at Hemenway’s restaurant, 121 South Main Street, Providence, courtesy of the Newport Restaurant Group.

“Supporting the culinary arts and cooking skill development while celebrating food resourced from our beautiful waters is an honor for all of us at Hemenway’s and our company. We look forward to showcasing the winning team’s delicious recipe for our guests!” said Kevin DiLibero, Culinary Arts Director, Newport Restaurant Group.

The student teams come from Chariho Career and Technical Center, Cranston Area Career and Technical Center, Davies Career and Technical High School, Warwick Area Career and Technical Center, and Westerly Career and Technical Education.

“There are a lot of health benefits to eating seafood, but sometimes people aren’t sure how to prepare it,” said Lori Pivarnik, University of Rhode Island Seafood Safety Outreach/Research Coordinator. “This fifth annual cook-off is a great learning opportunity for the students and gives the public some new ideas for making local seafood at home.”

The fish for this event is provided by The Local Catch.

The event is free to attend, but RSVPs are required. Please register online at https://riseagrantevents.wufoo.com/forms/qpgdazm1yqaq06/
