Northeast Sea Grant Fisheries

Because a regional approach is important when addressing a regional resource, the Northeast Sea Grant Fisheries Extension programs work cooperatively as well as independently on fisheries management issues, including bycatch reduction, licensing, habitat, and stock assessment.

This cooperative work has been furthered by the National Sea Grant Fisheries Extension Enhancement Initiative, a Congressional mandate intended to provide fisheries extension programming to stakeholder groups at local, regional, and national levels; to promote collaboration among federal and state fisheries agencies, management councils, and constituents to resolve fisheries issues; and to expand information exchange among all groups.

Northeast Sea Grant Fisheries Extension programs have participated in several projects, including educational workshops, Sea Grant Science Symposia, and gear conservation engineering efforts.

  • April 11, 2006: Geographic Information Systems and Ocean Mapping in Support of Fisheries Research and Management Forum
The need to coordinate mapping initiatives that support fisheries management and science has motivated the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sea Grant College Program and the Northeast Fisheries Science Center to provide a forum to identify focus specifically on the use of ocean mapping to support fisheries management and research. The region of interest is the Eastern seaboard from Cape Hatteras north. For more information, visit: http://web.mit.edu/seagrant/GIS06/index.html
