Pingguo He

Research Associate Professor for Fisheries,
Ocean Process Analysis Lab, Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space, Cooperative Extension/New Hampshire Sea Grant

Ph.D. Aberdeen University, 1987

Pingguo’s research focuses on fish behavior and fishing gear, and sustainable utilization of fisheries resources of Northeastern US and beyond. This includes the use of flume tank simulations, sea trials, underwater video observations, and statistical methods to understand fish behavior near fishing gears and in their natural habitat, and to apply fish behavioral knowledge in fishing gear designs and operations to reduce bycatch, discards and impact on the seabed. Examples of research projects include the use of grid devices in flatfish trawls to reduce cod discards in Gulf of Maine multispecies trawl fishery, semi-pelagic shrimp trawls to reduce seabed contacts, and research into selectivity of trawl codends of various mesh sizes and shapes. His earlier research subjects include fish swimming studies, and physiological aspects of locomotion in fish. His research has been conducted in Scotland (UK), Japan, China, Canada, and the US.
