Paid Commercial Fisherman Apprenticeship

The Commercial Fisherman Apprenticeship Program is a new crew training program designed and offered by the East Farm Commercial Fisheries Center of Rhode Island in cooperation with the University of Rhode Island, commercial fishermen, and supporting shoreline businesses of Point Judith. The training will provide essential knowledge and skills

The training will provide essential knowledge and skills to that will provided graduates the opportunity to become the next generation of conservation-minded seafood harvesters and secure full-time employment aboard local commercial fishing vessels.

The program consists of hands-on and classroom-based training sessions. Hands-on components will include safety training, seamanship, navigation, basic vessel maintenance, gear and net repair and trawl gear operation aboard commercial fishing vessels. Classroom sessions will include fishing as a business, Rhode Island fisheries management and regulations, stock assessment, cooperative research, data collection, species identification and discussion of the ethics of responsible fishing practices. Training Dates
July 10th – August 4th, 2017

Locations
Point Judith and Kingston, Rhode Island

Hours
Classroom training days will be 6-8 hours and fishing vessel days being approximately 12 hours. Fishing days will be weather dependent, but a total of three trips are included in the schedule.

Cost
None. The program is fully funded by National Fish and Wildlife Foundation via Fisheries Innovation Fund. Daily meals, fishing equipment, and course materials will be provided and there will be a stipend for course completion.

  • Graduating senior
  • Access to transportation and valid driver’s license
