The Rhode Island Ocean Special Area Management Plan, or Ocean SAMP, serves as a federally recognized coastal management and regulatory tool and is advancing marine spatial planning approaches through research and public input. Using the best available science, the Ocean SAMP provides a balanced approach to the development and protection of Rhode Island’s ocean-based resources.

The Sustainable Coastal Communities Extension Program works with the state coastal planning and regulatory agency, the R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council, on developing Special Area Management Plans (SAMPs) for coastal ecosystems throughout the state.
