Long Island Sound in a Jar
Heather M. Crawford
This publication is chock-full of fun learning experiences for youth (grades
48) relating to water, watersheds, pollution, and estuaries. Old favorites and
activities with a new twist are combined in this lavishly illustrated activity guide.
Originally intended for 4-H leaders and summer camp counselors, the activities are equally
useful for formal classroom educators and families. By playing games such as
"molecular tag" or "habitat circles," or creating a watershed puzzle,
young people undertake hands-on discovery of basic scientific and ecological concepts and
have fun, too. They discover the impact of humans on aquatic ecosystems, using Long Island
Sound as the example. Creating "Long Island Sound in a Jar," polluting it, and
then cleaning it up is only one of the challenges. Punched for 3-hole binder and
shrink-wrapped. 90 pages. CTSG-99-01. $3.50 plus postage.

This publication, now in its seventh iteration, is an invaluable guide for reaching a wide
range of organizations that deal with marine and coastal issues in Massachusetts. The
guide lists 179 groups devoted to various aspects of ocean research and coastal concerns.
Organizations are listed alphabetically and indexed by selected specialties. Entries

Formulation of a Model for Ship Transit Risk: Final Project Report
H.L. Kite-Powell, N. Patrikalakis, D. Jin, et al.
Groundings and collisions of commercial ships account for more than half of all commercial
maritime accidents. A better understanding of factors associated with those events can
lead to a decrease in risk. In this report, the investigators outline their investigation
of the relationship between factors such as environmental conditions, vessel
characteristics, operators information about the waterway, and the incidence of
groundings and collisions, using historical data. 59 pages. MITSG 98-6. $7.
A Quick Guide to Marine Bioinvasions
Andrea Cohen
This handy guide offers an introduction to marine bioinvasionshow and why they occur
and what the impacts can mean. Along with case studies, the guide includes information
about what you can do to prevent the likelihood of more invasions. 8 pages. MITSG 98-12.

Aquidneck Island: Our Shared Vision
Jennifer McCann, Deirdra Storti, and Virginia Lee
The Coastal Resources Center/Rhode Island Sea Grant spoke with many individuals and groups
on Aquidneck Island to find out what their hopes were for the future of the island, in
terms of land use and economic, social, and transportation issues. The islanders
visions have been incorporated into a full-color book that will be used to help plan
managed growth on the island in accordance with the goals set forth by its residents. 80
pages. RIU-B-99-001. $3.
Pawcatuck Watershed Water Resources: A management issues profile
Alan Desbonnet
The Pawcatuck River watershed, located in southwestern Rhode Island and southeastern
Connec-ticut, has an abundance of high-quality surface and groundwater for drinking and
recreational uses. Development pressures, however, pose risks to water resources. Already,
and without major new development occurring, public water suppliers are nearing their
limits to provide water, conflicts between user groups are escalating, and contaminant
threats to drinking water are increasing. This book defines the areas water
resources and the management issues pertaining to them, and describes current management
regimes and the work necessary for effective water management. 64 pages. RIU-T-99-001. $3.

Mating Systems and Sexual Selection in the Squid Loligo: How Might Commercial
Fishing on Spawning Squids Affect Them?
Roger Hanlon
The effect of targeted fishing on spawning grounds is central to the management of
commercially valuable squids for reasons including their short life cycle, dense spawning
aggregations, and existing fishing techniques. In this article, Hanlon outlines an
approach to studying reproductive behavior in the context of fisheries management, and
speculates on features of the mating system of Loligo opalescens that should be understood
before high levels of exploitation are permitted. 9 pages. WHOI-R-98-008. Free.
Coastal Landform Management in Massachusetts: Proceedings of a Workshop Held at
the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Tracey I. Crago and Sheri D. DeRosa (eds.).
This October 1997 workshop was designed to benefit resource management decision-makers
through interactive exercises and discussions of coastal problems ranging from those that
arise every day to those of unusual complexity. The immediate objective of the workshop
was to improve familiarity with existing management methodologies. The long-term objective
was to improve the methodologies themselves. 119 pp. WHOI-W-97-001. $12.00

Impact of Age-0 Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) Predation on Age-0 Fishes in the
Hudson River Estuary: Evidence for Density-dependent Loss of Juvenile Striped Bass (Morone
saxatilis)
Jeffrey A. Buckel, David O. Conover, Nancy D. Steinberg, and Kim A. McKown
Reprinted from the Can. J. Fish Aquat. Sci. 56:275-287, 1999. The investigators measured
bluefish weights, densities, prey sizes, and diets over several years to estimate the rate
of bluefish predation on young-of-the-year (YOY) striped bass. In the early summer of
1993, bluefish predation accounted for 50 to 100 percent of the total estimated loss of
YOY striped bass. The team concluded that bluefish are important predators of estuarine
fish and can have a substantial impact on their recruitment. 12 pages. NYSGI-R-99-002. $1.

Seafood HACCP Implementation Survey Evaluation Report
Ken Gall, New York Sea Grant Extension, in cooperation with the New York Seafood
Council. 1999
This report compiles and evaluates the responses to a survey questionnaire distributed to
500 seafood companies throughout the Northeast whose employees attended a three-day HACCP
training course. The surveys intent was to document the time, effort, and resources
the industry devoted to HACCP, identify changes or problems that occurred in the process,
and plan for additional training that might be needed. Survey responses indicate that 83
percent of the firms felt they would not have been able to develop a HACCP plan without
the training course. 42 pages. NYSGI-S-99-001. Free. |
