June 2007 Newsletter

Friends and colleagues,

We are pleased to welcome Kifle Hagos, an IGERT Fellow, as our new assistant editor of the husbandry and management section of the journal Aquaculture. His Ph.D. research involves sustainable mussel aquaculture development in southern New England. Prior to coming to the United States, Kifle served as director of fisheries management in his native Eritrea. To learn more about Kifle and the IGERT program, visit the IGERT website.

The Rhode Island Sea Grant Omnibus research portfolio competition has progressed to the peer review phase, with funding decisions to be determined in late August.

We have submitted the proceedings from our 2004 Ronald C. Baird Sea Grant Science Symposium to the Springer Series in Environmental Management, and expect “Science for Ecosystem-based Estuarine Management: Narragansett Bay in the 21st Century” to be published this fall in time for the Estuarine Research Federation meeting in Providence, of which Rhode Island Sea Grant is a sponsor.

Please be sure to join us on June 13 at 7 p.m. as we kick off summer with a lecture by R.I. Department of Environmental Management Director W. Michael Sullivan on “Marine and Freshwater Resources: Managing for the 21st Century” at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center in Pawtucket.

Barry Costa-Pierce
Rhode Island Sea Grant Director
