Free lecture explores Rhode Island's changing environment from rivers to the sea
RIDEM Director kicks off eighth annual Sea Grant/Cooperative Extension lecture series on June 13. This event previews Rhode Island Rivers Day, which takes place June 16, with events held at Slater Mill.
NARRAGANSETT—Rhode Island's riverine, bay, and ocean environments are changing: Coastlines are eroding, Narragansett Bay is warming, the species that inhabit the Bay are changing—all largely due to climate changes happening globally. How environmental managers deal with these changes will be the focus of a talk by W. Michael Sullivan, R.I. Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) director, on Wednesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. at Slater Mill's theater, located in the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center, Pawtucket.
Sullivan's talk, "Marine and Freshwater Resources: Managing for the 21st Century," will explore the impact of environmental changes related to coastal population growth, industrial activity, agricultural use, and fisheries.
The lecture is free, but seating is limited, so please reserve your place by calling Rhode Island Sea Grant Communications at (401) 874-6842. The theater is located at 175 Main St., Pawtucket, directly across the street from Slater Mill. For directions, visit http://www.tourblackstone.com/visitorcenter.htm. This lecture is sponsored by Rhode Island Sea Grant, the URI Cooperative Extension/Nutrition and Food Sciences Department, and Slater Mill.
