Knauss Fellow Joins US Committee on the Marine Transportation System

The US Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS) welcomes Ali Mitchell who has joined the CMTS Executive Secretariat as the 2017 Knauss Sea Grant Fellow representing Rhode Island Sea Grant.

Helen Brohl, Executive Director of CMTS, welcomes 2017 Knauss Fellow, Ali Mitchell.

Mitchell’s responsibilities during this year-long fellowship with CMTS will include activities in Arctic maritime transportation, maritime energy, and ocean policy. She will also be supporting the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics port freight statistics initiative.

Mitchell received her undergraduate degree from Williams College (MA) in religion, maritime studies, and international studies before going on to work as a blacksmith in Mystic Seaport Museum’s preservation shipyard, as a documentarian with women shipwrights in Washington state, and as a wearer of many hats in maritime programs for students.

These diverse perspectives guided her to a Master’s in Public Affairs from Brown University. Her graduate studies focused on the power of storytelling for public policy goals and the integration of sophisticated data analytics with social science to create and evaluate public policy.
