Smart Growth

Sachuest PointCoastal communities face development pressures that threaten to diminish the values that make them appeal to residents and visitors alike—open spaces, shoreline access, historic villages, clean water, and vibrant neighborhoods. The SUCCESS Program works with municipalities that want to preserve and enhance these qualities while encouraging compatible economic growth.

The SUCCESS Program worked with the Washington County Regional Planning Council to develop a vision for the future of the region that included smart growth goals for clean and plentiful waters, a landscape of vilage centers and open spaces, a healthy economy, diversified housing choices, and safe and efficient transportation. For more information about the WCRPC, visit its website at http://www.wcrpc.org.

SUCCESS is also working on smart growth initiatives with Aquidneck Island and Metro Bay municipalities to train community leaders in smart growth planning techniques. For more information, visit the Metro Bay SAMP website at http://seagrant.gso.uri.edu/metrosamp or the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission website at http://www.aquidneckplanning.org/.
