Natural Hazard Preparation, Resilience, and Recovery Strategies

Rhode Island Sea Grant has worked for more than 15 years with governments, the private sector, and community organizations to ensure coastal communities can face, and recover from, hurricanes, floods, and coastal storms. The challenge is to help communities achieve their visions for economic growth while reducing the potential impacts of natural hazards and maximizing public safety and public access to the shore.

To address these issues, the SUCCESS program works to help develop strategies to prepare for natural disasters, educate disaster preparedness and response professionals, enhance evacuation preparations, and plan for expediting recovery efforts.

SUCCESS plans to address floodplain management issues in Rhode Island, especially its urban regions, by helping develop coordinated, regional communication plans among Narrgansett Bay municipalities and enhancing post-storm debris removal plans.
