"For me, and for thousands with similar inclinations, the most important passion of life is the overpowering desire to escape periodically from the clutches of a mechanistic civilization.  To us the enjoyment of solitude, complete independence, and the beauty of undefiled panoramas is absolutely essential to happiness."

The URI Coastal Resources Center/Rhode Island Sea Grant, the Aquidneck Land Trust, and the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission are developing a map of outdoor recreational areas and public access throughout Aquidneck Island. This color map, illustrated with photos and complete with descriptions, will be available to residents and visitors in 2008. We would like your input: What locations should be included in the map? Let us know your favorite places, and if you like, what makes them special. We would also like any photos you have of those places, which we may include in the map or on the accompanying web site.

For more information or to send us your ideas, please contact: Monica Allard Cox, Rhode Island Sea Grant Communications, URI Bay Campus, Narragansett, RI 02882. Tel: (401) 874-6937. Fax: (401) 874-6817. E-mail: allard@gso.uri.edu.

The Aquidneck Island Outdoors recreational map is part of the Aquidneck Island Special Area Management Plan (SAMP), a new effort to improve management of the island's coastal areas. The SAMP is a public process that addresses coastal access, development, and economic issues, among other topics. For more information about the SAMP, contact Jennifer McCann at mccann@crc.uri.edu or visit seagrant.gso.uri.edu/ccd/aisamp.
