Where Does Your Seafood Come From? Contemporary Fisheries of Rhode Island
David Beutel and Nissa Kauppila

Famous for everything from clam cakes and chowder to steamed lobster dinners, Rhode Island is blessed with abundant fresh, local seafood, but few people know much about the fishing industry that provides it. This 25-minute documentary film examines the four most common contemporary fishing methods—bullraking, lobstering, gillnetting, and bottom trawling—used by local fishermen to deliver seafood to tables in the state and around the country. RIU-V-05-001. $10.

Shell Disease in Lobsters: A Synthesis
J. Stanley Cobb and Kathleen Castro
The emergence of a virulent form of shell disease in the southern New England population of the American lobster ( Homarus americanus) has raised concern among fishermen, managers, and scientists. Shell disease may change the rate of natural mortality and egg production and certainly makes the afflicted individuals less saleable. It poses a real challenge to the management of the fishery. This research synthesis addresses the history, prevalence and severity, and populationlevel effects of epizootic shell disease in the American lobster in New England waters. It also serves as background for the New England Lobster Research Initiative, a Congressionally funded cooperative research program to study the causes and consequences of lobster shell disease. 16 pages. RIU-T-06-001. $3.

Regional Ocean Governance: The Role of the Public Trust Doctrine
Kristen Fletcher
Following the Pew Ocean Commission and U.S. Ocean Commission recommendations, policymakers have begun considering using regional ocean governance to better manage ocean and coastal resources. This requires examination of the historical underpinnings of ocean and coastal management, namely the Public Trust Doctrine. This article, reprinted from Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum 16:187– 204, looks at the role of the Public Trust Doctrine at state, regional, and national levels. 17 pages. RIU-R-06-006. Available on loan from the National Sea Grant Library. Contact Joyce Winn at (401) 874-6114 or visit nsgl.gso.uri.edu.

The Rhode Island Sea Grant Sustainable Coastal Communities and Ecosystems Extension Program is offering a Low Impact Development (LID) Master Design Certificate training program on February 6. The R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) Urban Coastal Greenway (UCG) Policy requires all those seeking CRMC permits to develop in the Metro Bay Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) region to show proof of this certificate to proceed with the CRMC permitting process. Certification attendees will: 1) review components of the UCG policy; 2) learn how to apply LID techniques to urban coastal settings; and 3) explore policy impacts on development requirements in the Metro Bay SAMP region. Attendees who complete the course will receive hard-copy certification via mail post-event. The registration fee is $300. For more information, visit the Metro Bay SAMP website at: seagrant.gso.uri.edu/metrosamp/calendar.html.

The URI Coastal Institute will host a URI GPS Field Day in Spring 2007. This first-ever event will provide an opportunity for new users to learn about the Global Positioning System (GPS) and how it is being used in Rhode Island for a wide variety of applications. Experienced users will share GPS hardware, ranging from recreational grade to survey grade. Details and registration information will be made available this winter by the URI Geospatial Extension Program at: geospatial.uri.edu.

Make plans to attend the R.I.Natural History Survey annual conference on March 22, 2007. Visit www.uri.edu/ce/rinhs for upcoming information.
